Which Micro-Mesh grade do you need?

Start with the coarsest grit needed to remove the defect. 1,500 Micro-Mesh is roughly equivalent to 400-grit sandpaper. That is still considered fine for most polishing tasks. If you start with a grit that is too fine, you will spend hours rubbing without changing the surface. If you start too coarse, you leave deep scratches that require more work to remove.
Then move up the scale. 3,000, then 6,000, then 9,000, and finally 12,000. Each step removes the scratches left by the previous one. The final result is a glass-like smoothness.
For tougher materials, look at Micro-Mesh MXD. These pads contain diamond particles instead of standard crystals. Diamond is harder. It cuts faster. The MXD range goes from 40 to 1,800. To put that in perspective, 120 MXD creates a scratch pattern similar to 180-grit sandpaper. That is aggressive removal. Use MXD for stone, metal, or heavily oxidized surfaces where regular Micro-Mesh would just polish the dirt on top rather than removing the damage underneath.
How to buy and store Micro-Mesh
You can find these pads in sheets, rolls, discs, or specialty kits. Sheets offer the most versatility. You can tear them to size. Discs fit into random orbit polisher backings if you want to speed up the process with a power tool. Rolls are economical for large, flat surfaces.
