Your swimming pool is not just a hole in the ground filled with water. It is a mechanical system. Water must circulate. It has to move through filters. This process pulls out dirt. Debris gets caught. If water stayed still, your pool would turn green and murky in days.
Water moves toward the filter through two main channels. You have main drains at the bottom. You also have skimmer drains around the top edge.

Main drains sit at the lowest point of the pool shell. The floor usually slopes down toward them. Gravity does the heavy lifting here. Heavy particles sink. They exit through these bottom drains.
Most of the heavy dirt falls out this way. Lighter stuff stays floating or hangs near the surface. That is where the skimmers come in. They catch the rest before it settles.
Why Antivortex Covers Matter
You will notice a grate over each main drain. This is not just for looks. It is a safety device.
Children and adults have gotten trapped in these drains. Strong suction can hold a limb in place. Hair can get sucked into the plumbing. It is a serious hazard.
Modern covers are called antivortex covers. They divert the water flow. They stop a dangerous vortex from forming. A vortex is a swirling vacuum. It is powerful. It can pull a person under.
These covers break up the suction. They spread the pull across a wider area. This keeps swimmers safe. It also helps the filter work better by preventing large debris from clogging the lines too quickly.
Check your pool’s drains regularly. Make sure they are secure. No loose screws. No missing grates. Clean water starts with good circulation. And safe circulation starts with proper covers.
How Surface Skimmers Keep Pool Water Clean
Skimmers operate on a simple principle. They pull water just like main drains do, but with one key difference. They only take from the very top layer. Think of it as grabbing the top eighth of an inch of water. That is where the floating junk lives. Leaves. Hair. Suntan oil. The skimmer sucks that debris out of the pool and into the plumbing.
A typical setup uses a floating weir. This is a small door at the inlet passage. It swings in and out. This motion allows only a tiny volume of water to enter at a time. The goal here is precision. You want to skim exactly at the surface level. If the weir moves too wildly, you pull water from below the surface. If it doesn’t move enough, debris stays behind.
Once the water passes the weir, it hits a strainer basket. This basket catches the big stuff. Twigs. Leaves. Bugs. It filters them out before the water goes deeper into the system. But the skimmer does more than just clean. It has a backup plan.
The Equalizer Line and Safety Features
Most skimmer systems include a secondary equalizer line. This pipe leads to a drain located below the main water line. Why is this important? It prevents the pump from sucking air.
If your pool water level drops, you don’t want the pump pulling air. Air is bad for pumps. It causes cavitation and damage. The equalizer line ensures the pump always has water to pull from, even if the surface level is low.

Safety is built into the design. Pool filtration involves a lot of suction. If a pool is built correctly, there is virtually no risk of suction holding someone against a drain. This is a common fear, but engineering mitigates it.
How does it work? By having multiple drains. Both main drains and skimmer drains. If a person blocks one drain, the pump simply pulls water from another open drain. The suction on the blocked drain disappears. The pressure equalizes. This is why you see multiple return jets and drains in commercial pools. It is a fail-safe.
Vacuum Ports for Deep Cleaning
Most swimming pools also include vacuum ports. These are not part of the main circulation loop. They are used only for manual cleaning.
You attach a vacuum hose to these ports. The vacuum head is similar to a household vacuum, but it sucks water instead of air. It pulls dirt from the bottom of the pool. The water travels through the hose into the skimmer or a dedicated suction line.
In many pools, these ports are driven by the main pump. You don’t need a second motor. Just connect the hose. Turn on the pump. Clean the floor.
