Best Materials for DIY Dog Houses: Wood, Plastic, and Safety Tips

You can build a dog house out of practically anything. But not every material works for every situation. Your climate and your dog’s behavior dictate what you should use. The two most common options are wood and plastic.

Wood wins for most builders. It is cheap. It is easy to cut. Most DIY guides show lumber in their diagrams. It’s familiar territory. You likely built a birdhouse or a simple shelf at some point. Wood adapts to most climates. But if you live in a wet, humid zone, cedar is your best bet. It resists rot better than pine or fir.

Plastic is the lightweight alternative. It is waterproof. That is a massive advantage for an outdoor shelter. Plastic also ignores termites. Wood does not. If your dog is a chewer, pick sturdy plastic or thick wood. Cheap materials will turn into splinters or shards quickly.

Insulation matters more than you think. You might need it even if you live in a hot region. It stops your dog from overheating. You can buy foam barriers. Or you can use pre-insulated panels. Either way, add a layer between the outside air and the interior.

Safety is non-negotiable. This applies to you during construction and your dog while they use it.

Roofing Safety for DIY Builders

Don’t let your dog turn into a human toaster. If your pup likes to lounge on the roof, avoid real roll roofing. Shingles are out. Metal is out. These materials absorb sunlight. They get dangerously hot.

Instead, use untreated plywood. Or use non-toxic treated plywood. It stays cooler. It is safer for paws and noses. Check the temperature with your hand before letting your dog up there. If it burns you, it burns them.
